VLC Speaker Series: The Coral Reef Project with Drs. Maria Fernandez Cifuentes and Leidy Barrero In-Person

"The Coral Reef Project is an innovative student collaborative initiative that aims to enhance Spanish language education through the creation of immersive educational resources. Focusing on Florida's Coral Reef, the project incorporates a virtual reality (VR) component to provide an engaging and interactive learning experience. This endeavor is part of the OER-Immersive Multimedia Materials Project, a larger initiative at UNF that explores the integration of community-based learning and undergraduate research into Spanish language courses at both lower and upper levels.

Aligned with a neuroscience-informed pedagogy, specifically Mayer's Principles of Multimedia Learning (2001), the materials have been thoughtfully structured and paced to prevent cognitive overload among students. Furthermore, they have been made available online as public domain resources, contributing to the broader Open Educational Resources (OER) movement. As a testament to their practicality, these resources will be implemented in a beginning Spanish course during the upcoming Fall 2023 semester."
