Science Cafe: Addressing Adult's Math Misconceptions about Health-Related Statistics In-Person
Science Cafe presents: "Addressing Adult's Math Misconceptions about Health-Related Statistics" presented by Dr. Charles Fitzsimmons, Assistant Professor of Psychology.
In this research talk, Dr. Fitzsimmons will show evidence that adults have misconceptions about COVID-19 and other health-related statistics that stem from a common mathematical error. Then, Dr. Fitzsimmons will show how (1) a brief educational intervention and (2) visual displays can reduce adults' errors and improve their understanding of health statistics. Dr. Fitzsimmons will conclude with an open discussion about some ongoing analyses, publicly available data, and the potential impact of and opportunities for broad collaborations in research.
The goal of the Science Café is to encourage dialogue between scientists and the public, strengthening science literacy and illustrating the impact of science on the world around us.
Organized by the Psychology Department in partnership with the Thomas G. Carpenter Library and the Biology Department.
